Oral Health Techniques – Proper Brushing | Dr. Ben Wang

If you are using an electric toothbrush, you may be under the impression that you don’t have to do much work anymore, as the brush will do it for you. However, you have to make sure that you are using the proper technique with these brushes in the same way that you would with a traditional model. Follow these tips to ensure that you are using your electric toothbrush properly.

GET USED TO YOUR BRUSH

It can be hard to get used to the shape of an electric toothbrush, as it tends to feel differently than a traditional toothbrush. For this reason, you may want to get used to the feel of your toothbrush before you start brushing with it. The vibrations can sometimes be disorienting and distracting, so by first practicing with the brush to get it in the right position, you’ll feel more comfortable once you turn it on.

DIVIDE UP YOUR MOUTH INTO QUARTERS

In order to get the most out of your brushing routine, divide up your mouth into four quarters: right, left, top, and bottom. This can make sure that you are brushing each section equally. While you can start in any quadrant that you wish, make sure you thoroughly brush each section as well as the roof of your mouth and your tongue.

BRUSH FROM THE OUTSIDE IN

When brushing your teeth, you should be sure to maintain a 45-degree angle and brush the outer surfaces first before moving to the inner surfaces using a rolling motion. This rolling motion can be achieved by contacting the brush on the gum line and then moving downward toward the chewing surface.
