Tobacco products are bad for teeth and gums. Not only esthetically, but health wise as well. It is tough to quit any habit, but especially smoking. However, what some of my patients don’t realize is that smoking can be fatal.

Like every dentist, I have patients who smoke. What I try to tell them is that smoking is one of the main reasons people lose their teeth and chewing and smoking tobacco is bad for teeth and gums. Smoking causes gum recession and leads to tooth loss. Not only that, tobacco products can cause oral cancer.

When you chew and smoke tobacco, your teeth will stain. Even smoking just a few cigarettes a day or a week will turn your teeth yellow. Heavy smokers can thank tobacco use for brown teeth.

The most common reason people lose their teeth is gum disease. Chewing and smoking tobacco is bad for teeth and gums. People who chew or smoke tobacco produce plaque. Plaque leads to gingivitis and the more serious periodontal disease. When you smoke, you are reducing the oxygen in your bloodstream. Healing is compromised when you smoke. This creates an environment that is loaded with bad bacteria.

If left untreated, gum disease will cause tooth loss. If your gums recede, there is nothing to hold the root of the tooth in place. It will become lose and eventually fall out.

Most people are aware that smoking causes throat cancer and lung cancer; however, most of my patients have no idea that thousands of people die every year from tobacco use.
