Porcelain Veneers or Dental Bonding Whats the Difference?

Porcelain Veneers Or Dental Bonding Whats The Difference?

Porcelain veneers and cosmetic dental bonding are similar in that they both repair chips and cracks, teeth that cannot be lightened with professional teeth whitening products or teeth that are tipped or rotated.

Porcelain Veneers

I have many patients who come in asking for cosmetic dental bonding; unfortunately, some of those patients are more suited to porcelain veneers.

What is Cosmetic Dental Bonding and the Process?

Cosmetic dental bonding takes place in a single dental visit, unlike porcelain veneers that need two or three dental appointments to complete. Cosmetic dental bonding is placed, sculpted, molded, and bonded to teeth that are cracked or chipped. Dental bonding also works for teeth that are spaced and teeth that are tipped or rotated.

During your appointment, I will prepare the tooth or teeth with an etching solution. Once the solution is applied, I will carefully apply dental resin to the tooth before sculpting it to the desired shape and size. After I am satisfied with the results, I will use a laser or light to bond the material into place. Once I have sculpted and polished, your teeth will look beautiful.

What are Porcelain Veneers and the Process?

Porcelain veneers are made from dental porcelain and are permanent. A portion of the enamel is removed so that the veneers will look natural and fit your teeth. This avoids that too thick look that we have all seen before.

Once I have removed the enamel, I will make a mold or impression of your teeth. This will be sent to the lab for manufacture. If your teeth are not ready to be seen in public, I may fit you with a set of temporary dental veneers.

During your final appointment, I will check your new veneers for fit. Once I am satisfied, I will use a bonding material before hardening the bond with a laser or light. After the bond has hardened your new smile will be polished to perfection.
